One-of-a-Kind Finds: The Next Big Thing (We’ve Got Our Finger On the Pulse Here Friends)

I was at a conference recently which was largely populated with incredibly stylish young women. They all looked fantastic and chic and, well… homogeneous.  At some point I started to wish that someone would walk in looking full-blown crazy just to shake things up.

There’s a bit of a “sea of sameness” thing happening of late. Everyone’s in the know, hitting the trends, rocking’ the “good taste.” And it’s a little boring.

I tend to think that the antidote to sameness is sussing out the “one-of-a-kind” with a vengeance. Think estate sales, flea markets, out of the way haunts. Sleuth, dig, unearth. You’ll be better for it, I promise…

But you better do it quick, because if the found shops at West Elm and Serena and Lily (the source for these fetching rattan and fabric pendant lights) and Wisteria are any evidence, one-of-a-kind is the next big thing.

Feeling Pink

I’m in the midst of a decidedly “pink” moment, which, given my steadfast devotion to all things neutral, is throwing me for a bit of a loop.

There’s just something about a little shock of pink (preferably of the neon variety) that gives an otherwise staid space an injection of whimsy. Case in point, that perfectly lovely room to the right is now burned permanently on my design consciousness thanks to the pink throw pillow resting there all nonchalantly.

Well played pink.  Well played.

In the Words of Brad Goreski: Add a “POC” Right Now

As I was saying last week, we’re sort of obsessed with cobalt blue. We’re also obsessed with Brad Gorski’s new show on Bravo, It’s a Brad Brad World. (As people who like to shorten words unnecessarily, his “POC”—or pop of color—makes us laugh.) But guess where we’re not loving the POC? Sarah Michelle Gellar’s dress from last night’s Golden Globes. (In her defense, she claims that her 2-year-old daughter chose the Monique Lhuillier gown.) But we do love, love, love the idea of bringing in a smattering of  blue in your home. You should stop what you’re doing and get some blue home accessories like these right this very minute.

What Follows a Month of Missoni Madness?

The Missoni for Target Square Pouf

The month of September was many things to many people. For some, it was a reminder that this 100-degree summer is never, ever going to end. For others, it was all about getting the kids back to school. But for a great many, September was all about the Missoni Madness. People lost their minds at area Targets. Nest had a month-long(ish) sale on their fancy Missoni items. (The sale ends today by the way, so you might want to pop by.) A woman had the gall to place a pair of Missoni for Target goloshes on eBay for a whopping $31,000. So now that it’s all over—most of the line for Target is long gone—what’s next ? I vote for Oly October.

My iPhone Wants to Safari. And I Do, Too.

iPhone 4 cover by Kate Spade

Rhonda left for Canada today. Christine is in New York City. Peggy is leaving me tomorrow. I would like to go on safari, but I have neither the time nor the resources for that at the moment. In the meantime, I will make do with this fun iPhone case ($40 at katespade.com). I know this isn’t really homey, but I will just put it on my coffee table and make it part of my home decor. Also, I think it could make me money. I  just got the new white iPhone, and my friends have bet me that it will be broken inside a week. It might make it two with this nifty case.

Seriously, You Have To Be A Raging UT Or A&M Fan To Even Look At This.

I'm not much for putting school logos on anything except maybe a spiral notebook or a koozie, but the handiwork on these hammocks is actually exquisite. (Photography by Desiree Espada)

I TOLD YOU: this post is only for serious, devoted, nay, obssessive UT or A&M fans, whom I know are very different persons but who also are very much the same in the WAY-WAY-WAY-into-it category. These handmade hammocks can be found at Jacksons Home and Garden Center and they would make a thoughtful gift for a big fan who can roll with a Mexican lace vibe. I think. I actually would love them if they lost the side action and the logostics (cool word, I just made that up). Jacksons also has a Dallas Cowboy branded hammock but, ya know, I just couldn’t bring myself to post it.

When you walk into Jacksons, look up. The hammocks are hanging from the ceiling. (Photography by Desiree Espada)

Cool For No Reason: MOMA Skyline Packing Tape

I am going to get in trouble for writing about an out-of-state vendor; we love and support our locals, yes we do. But at this moment I myself am out of state, and I am so fond of this “Skyline Packing Tape” from the Museum of Modern Art that I had to share. (Plus this is about the closest I think I will get to Istanbul in this lifetime.) For some reason, a nutter or a genius, not sure which, created packing tape with a silhouette of the Istanbul skyline, and I don’t get it but I love it. Made in Turkey. Presuming you are not a member, you can buy it for 9 bucks online. Or you can tell me I’m crazy.

The whole urban chicken thing was lost on me until I saw this chicken coop designed by Raad, which showed up last week at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York. Three stories, awesome views inside and out. All of Raad’s work is original and well-designed. They’re New York-based, and the coops are available through Raad’s site, but could someone local please represent this design?

Coral Is A Great Color For Fashion This Season. But As A Design Element, Spent.

Pretty coral frocks at Forty Five Ten (from their website fortyfiveten.com).

I invested in a great coral Akris jacket last month, swept up with my salesperson’s assurance that coral was the color this season. My succumbance (not sure it’s a word, but it’s good, right?) to the fashion gods brought to mind a column we published a while back by David Feld, who wrote a scold to everyone who bit on the coral fad, in this case referencing the marine organisms that for about three seasons made their way to every pillow, coffee table, and textile in America. Now they look tired, which is a shame because they are actually rather cool.
