Pieces from the new Adriana Hoyos showroom in the Dallas Design District. Photography by Jill Broussard.

I had the pleasure of interviewing South American furniture designer Adriana Hoyos for a Shop Talk piece for this month’s D Home. She is a very busy lady. She opened her third U.S. showroom (she has 11 internationally) in Dallas last month. She designs projects for high-end clients and hotels around the world. She jets here and there and everywhere else (her original designs were sketched on an airplane napkin). The best part? She is a very lovely and humble woman.

Check out her line at the new 3,500-square-foot showroom. It’s chock full of architectural-inspired designs such as tables, beds, sofas, and chairs. Hoyos told me that she pays much attention to the proportion of each piece with each one reflecting a sculpture of sorts. She also keeps the client’s need to customize in mind. The showroom features a Design Your Own program. Every item in the store is customizable with a choice of 11 finishes, five tops and up to 40 fabric options. You do the math. It’s an endless amount of possibilities. You can read more about Adriana and the showroom here.

Michael Wilson Makes Gorgeous Furniture

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be hosting a wedding shower and a rehearsal dinner…at my house, which means I have a ‘to do’ list a mile long. And, as is my M.O. when it comes to pressing deadlines and looming tasks, I’m surfing the Internet like it’s my job.

So I figured the least I could do is pretend said Internet surfing actually is my job and share some of what I’ve been ogling online with you guys, yes?

Ok, here goes. For the past hour, the object of my online affection has been one Mr. Michael Wilson, woodworker extraordinaire. The California native was a detail-obsessed sushi chef for seventeen years before focusing on handcrafting modern-organic, sculptural pieces of furniture. A self-taught woodworker, Wilson is involved in every aspect of creating a piece, from hand selecting materials from local suppliers to milling his own lumber and making his own non-synthetic oil and wax finish. Each finished product is a true work of art, branded and dated upon completion.

Wilson now resides in Wimberley and offers his one-of-a-kind chairs, tables, lamps, and sculptures locally through  Scott + Cooner.

You can learn more on (yep, you guessed it) the internet

artful_decoration copyI am a sucker for a good design tome. (Given my chosen profession, not such a surprise, I suppose). And Artful Decoration, the new book of (insanely gorgeous) interiors by Fisher Weisman designers Andrew Fisher and Jeffry Weisman, most definitely qualifies as a “good design tome.” In fact, with all the stunning photos detailing the San Francisco–based design firm’s traditional meets exotic interiors, I might even consider this bad boy a “really great” design tome.

Tomorrow, April 30 from 2-4, Fisher and Wiesman will be on hand to sign copies of their book at Ceylon et Cie. Pop by to ogle designer Michelle Nussbaumer’s goods, buy a book, and then ask the dynamic duo how they mange to create rooms that feel at once opulent and restrained.

RSVP to info@ceylonetcie or call 214-742-7632

Done and done.

Peggy Levinson’s Modest Proposal For the Dallas Design District

Editor-at-large Peggy Levinson wrote a piece about the Design District in our Jan/Feb issue. We’ve had a lot o of requests for it to go online. So here it isTwenty-five years ago, I had a wholesale showroom on Hi Line Drive. We were open only to the trade, as were all other showrooms in the Decorative District, which was an oasis of wholesale luxury furnishings in a sea of seedy modeling studios and bail bondsmen. Amid that squalor, chic and glamorous interior designers spent millions of dollars on behalf of their clients. In certain cases, we would allow clients to come in if they had a letter from the designer, but that was the exception. All price lists were retail, and woe to the salesperson who quoted net in front of the end-user. It was a secretive and mysterious business and, let’s face it, divine.

Hilary Walker Goes Vintage Furniture Shopping

(Treasures spotted by Hilary at Past Perfect in Fort Worth)

Our lovely D Home blog contributor Hilary Walker is back with more second-hand shopping goodness. This week she weighs in on the merits of vintage furniture and some of her favorite places to find it in Dallas-Fort Worth.

*******

By Hilary Walker

Let’s keep our conversation about second-hand furniture going for another week, shall we?

If you’re not one for sifting through the layers of thrift “trash” to reach the treasure, then vintage furniture shopping may be more your style. You’ll still encounter an element of treasure hunting, but the options to choose from are much more edited. For instance, you probably won’t find too many bins of used bedding or shelves of kitschy nick knacks (half of which are plastic and cheap) at your local vintage store. What you will find is an array of vintage pieces with individual flair from a wide range of eras and in various conditions.

There is all sorts of design action going down tonight in our fair city starting with a food truck happy hour at the David Sutherland showroom from 4-6 p.m. Hook and Ladder Draught House will be serving up wood-fire pizza and adult sips, and, to satisfy your sweet tooth, CoolHaus will be handing out their sublime ice cream sandwiches.

Count us in!

Once you’ve gotten your fill of pizza and ice cream, walk over to the Dwell with Dignity Thrift Studio for their fall preview party from 6:30 – 9 p.m. As Ryan mentioned last week, your $125 ticket (available here) gives you the chance to shop the store’s new inventory (before the crowds descend) while supporting Dwell with Dignity’s mission to create soothing, inspiring homes for families struggling with homelessness and poverty. A win/win, yes?

Finally, head over to Design Within Reach on McKinney for their Night of Design event that goes until 9 p.m. tonight. They’ll have snacks and sips on hand while you shop their semiannual sale. While you’re there, also be sure to enter to win a Nelson Ball Clock.

Happy shopping!

Styling Beds with Abbe Fenimore, Tonia B., and Suzan Davidson at Peacock Alley Studio

I hit the Peacock Alley Studio in the design district over lunch today to take part in a little styling “challenge” (well there wasn’t a winner, so technically we were challenging ourselves to summons our styling prowess, but it was incredibly fun nonetheless). The actual assignment was to create our dream bed/surrounding area, using pieces from the studio. The sky was the limit, and friends, I took full advantage, tearing through that place like a madwoman, leaving a trail of pillows and blankets in my wake (sorry Laura, Katherine, and Brad).

My inspiration for my nook was the Montauk home of New York designers Roman and Williams (yes, we were asked to come with an inspiration), which I played homage to with a mix of texture heavy coverlets and pillows, some faux fur action, some gilded accessories, plus a few vintage pieces and books that I brought from home. Convinced my space needed a shot of green, I also nabbed a low-hanging branch off the tree in front of the studio, which I’m pretty sure is bad form from an eco perspective, but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do, yes?

The lovely Abbe Fenimore of Studio Ten 25, Tonia B. of Chic Modern Vintage, and Suzan Davidson of Suzan Davidson Designs also took part in the fun. (To my knowledge they did not harm any flora in the process.) I’ll have a full reveal of all our spaces in a couple of weeks.

Stay tuned.

For peeps not in the design profession, trade-only showrooms can be an intimidating enterprise. But fear not, as Allan Knight and Associates is flinging open its doors to the public for its first ever “A-List Outlet” Tag Sale.Think off the bolt textiles, upholstery, lighting, pillows, accessories, acrylic furniture (my love for acrylic knows no bounds), and a cache of select items from Les Antiques.

Behold These Stunning Rugs

I am a rug girl…big time.

I can wile away the better part of an evening sussing out gems on eBay and, (in the midst of a 2:00 a.m. moment of weakness), have pulled the trigger on more than one bargain-priced beauty unearthed from some coffee house halfway around the globe. Suffice to say, said “beauties” required several days of airing out on our back patio before they could safely enter the house. But such is the price of a cut-rate vintage rug, yes?

Robin Gray’s new rug collection, on the other hand, is a whole different animal. The eight designs in her new “Lace” collection riff on the delicate fabric, giving it a modern, graphic feel. The result is a (rather stunning) work of art for your floor.

No airing out required.

You can take a peek at the beauties person (during daytime hours natch) at Scott + Cooner.

Again and Again’s New Digs

I popped by to check out Again and Again’s newest home on Riverfront on Friday, and the digs did not disappoint.

Owner Leslie Pritchard is actually toggling between the old and new spaces, frenetically moving over scores of furniture and chairs (holy hell the chairs…Leslie is like the chair whisperer), so for the time being there are two places to nab some of her vintage goodness.

The new store is a bit of a hybrid of Leslie’s old Henderson Avenue showroom and her current warehouse full-o-diamonds in the rough, with the the front of the shop devoted to a smattering of artfully arranged refurbished pieces. But as you weave through the rest of the space the offerings become less polished.

The new formula allows shoppers to customize a piece with potential or walk out with something ready for prime time. The choice is up to you…

Either way, it’s good stuff.

Edison Bulbs, a Gold Log, and Mennonite Art (Or My Favorite Things at Taylors on Ten)

(Layout by Charlotte Tobin.)

I took a field trip to Taylors on Ten in the World Trade Center yesterday to check out some of the goods in their 18,000(!) foot showroom, and, well… holy lighting goodness. I have literally never seen so many beautiful lamps (and sconces and chandeliers) in one place. Ever.

Besides the extravaganza-o-illumination, here are a few (extremely awesome) things that caught my eye:

  • 1.  Phillips Collection gold log side table
  • 2. Bliss Studio’s (massive) spindle club chair
  • 3. SkLO glass wall vases
  • 4. Ralph Lauren Edison bulb chandelier (A light fixture, I realize, but it’s just so good, I had to include it.)
  • 5. Soicher Marin Mennonite farm journal prints
