AramWe asked five of our favorite florists and event planners (Todd Fiscus, Minh Nguyen, Jordan Payne, Robin Brogan, and Haile Wossen) to answer the simple question: Is this Vincent table by Michael Aram crazy or cool? You’ll love the responses, but you’ll have to pick up the May/June 2013 issue of D Home to see them.

But today I’m turning the tables on you, reader. What do you think?

P.S. If the answer is cool, you can find the table at Nest for $2,900.

I’m Back With Some Marble

MarbleBowl

Crate & Barrel’s marble fruit bowl ($49.95).

Did you miss me? I was on set all week styling wedding gowns for a feature for the upcoming Fall/Winter issue of D Weddings. I spent three days at the historic Dallas Scottish Rite cathedral and library and I have to say, I walked away obsessing, dreaming, and thinking about marble. (If you have never been to the massive Corinthian building–it’s impressive. It’s pretty much a marble-lovers paradise. Architecture notes here.)

I get to my desk this morning and what do I see? The new May/June issue of D Home–out on newsstands next Thursday–with a full page devoted to my new obsession. It’s like Joslyn was reading my mind. Stay tuned for more.

To Celebrate Our “Life In Color” Contest, We’re Revisiting Some of Our Favorite Rooms

We’re pretty excited about the Texas Paint & Wallpaper/D Home Life in Color contest around here (check out the full details on how to enter). So excited in fact, that we all wore black today.

(Oy vey… We’re a sad bunch.)

But despite our sartorial subdue, we are color lovers, I promise. And to prove it, we’ve spent the morning digging through the D Home archives in search of our favorite color-drenched spaces from past issues.

It was a throwdown (think name calling, obscene gestures, hair pulling), but we all managed to come out of it alive (barely), and we eventually achieved consensus on our hue-tastic favorites.

First and foremost, there’s the technicolor high-rise from our November/December 2012 issue. Holy color Batman!

From D Home: Ceramic Plant Markers

Were you out in your yard/garden this weekend? I was a little mad at the weatherman because we were promised sunny 80 degrees on Sunday, but my husband and I (read: my husband) were still determined to clean out our flower beds and plant some spring flowers. Some day I hope to work up to master gardener status and start an herb collection. Mostly because I want to buy these adorable ceramic plant markers ($6) at Anthropologie.

For more garden inspiration, see the pretty page of products in the March/April issue of D Home.

The Big Read Dallas Launch: Win Two Copies of Fahrenheit 451

The Big Read Dallas launches today. More than 21,000 copies of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 were handed out to ninth- and tenth-grade Dallas ISD students with the hopes that the entire city will read and talk about the book during the month of April. Civic leadership training program D Academy, D Magazine Partners, and the Friends of the Public Library organized the event.

We’re all excited about it around here. Employees of the D Empire have worked hard to make this effort happen. D Magazine‘s Krista Nightengale and a crew of volunteers were up at 4:30 am this morning handing out books at DART stations. And they want to give you a book, too.

In the March/April issue of D Home, we asked our Best Designers to recommend their favorite design book. The must-haves are in the picture above. Tell us your favorite design book in the comments and you can win two special editions of Fahrenheit 451. The special edition includes a D logo and a note to readers on the first page.

The catch? You have to give one of the books away to someone you run into that day (not a relative or co-worker). We ask that you post a photo of you and your new friend (with the books) on Facebook or Instagram. It’s fun, right? I will choose 10 winners on Wednesday at noon. You can pick up your books at D Magazine‘s downtown office.

For more information, check out the website or download the app. Happy reading!

If you’re looking for design help, we’ve come to your rescue once again. You’ll find the exclusive list of Best Designers in the brand-spanking-new March/April issue of D Home. You don’t have to thank us. (But if you insist, we like Tiff’s Treats, Mi Cocina, and Red Vines.) Anyway. The 2013 list of Best Designers is derived from a survey of more than 250 local showrooms. And even better: we asked the winning designers which products, surfaces, colors, books, and accessories you need now. Like the Caste Designer Bridger bench found at David Sutherland Home pictured above. Get the list of products here.

It’s the Best Designers in Dallas issue–always a favorite. Subscribers should be getting the magazine any day and you can find the magazine on newsstands next week. This year, we asked the winning designers what our readers need to buy now in categories like paint colors, books, surfaces, seating, and fabrics. One of our favorite products in the feature is this Niermann Weeks Serpentine bed coveted by Laura Lee Clark Falconer. Or, maybe it is the Pluie Chandelier Petite from Allan Knight suggested by Tracy Rasor. Either way, check out the issue for more great products from the designers we love.

Geo Sculptures Available at Arteriors

Do you ever flip through the Out & About section of D Home? There’s some good stuff there including products from local shops and showrooms and new stores to check out. This issue, we feature a page of handmade treasures (sticking with our Made in Dallas theme) that are not only works of art, but pretty too. I am kinda obsessed with the geo wood and iron sculptures, available to the trade at Arteriors. They’re angular, interesting, and would make a nice addition to a table top or bookshelf. Check out the January/February issue to see more one-of-a-kind products.

Clockwise from top: Bell'Invito, Color Box Design & Letterpress, Southern Fried Paper, Paradise Design Co., Missing Q Press, Silas Tom. Photography by Maxine Helfman.

The latest issue of D Home is out on newsstands now. The D Home crew is proud of this one, especially the”Made in Dallas” feature showcasing some of the coolest local people making unique things. We interviewed and photographed a group of artists who are truly making this city a more exciting place. You’ll find taxidermy art, geode boxes, gun lamps, and more.  Click here for the story.

Gracing the cover is designer Gonzalo Bueno’s hidden jewel in West Highland Park. His home is filled with an exciting art collection (read: an unusual sculpture made from the blood and hair of artist Paula Santiago).  Also be sure to check out his exotic collectibles–he’ll make you think twice about taking on a boring ol’ penny collection and striving for something edgier.

Jennifer and Scott Roberts’ Highland Park home has a California vibe with family-centric elements. The duo at Breckinridge Taylor hooked them up with a pad that is liveable and pretty.

We hope you’re inspired by the issue. As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Sep/Oct D Home Hits Stands September 6th. In Other News: I Need a New Hobby.

As editor, one of my duties is coming up with a letter for every issue. In the upcoming issue, for example, I write about my love for theme parties. I was feeling pretty good about it, too. Until today, that is. Now—thanks to PaperCity‘s Jim Kastleman—not only am I rethinking my letter, I’m also really mad about my lack of experience in crime fighting. While my note features a college photograph of me in a toga, Kastleman’s publisher’s letter details his foray into law enforcement. Seriously guys. He’s “body slamming” and using tae kwon do to bring down a “tattooed-from-head-to-toe skinhead” while I’m reminiscing about fraternity parties. But never fear: I intend to right that wrong. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, please check out the new D Home when it hits stands on Thursday.

Lucia Simek on Selecting Art for the D Home March/April Issue

Our friend and contributing editor Lucia Simek helped make selections for our March/April cover. Here’s what she has to say about the process: When D Home art director Jamie Laubhan-Oliver asked me to select some contemporary artwork from local galleries to help fill the walls for the cover of this month’s Art Issue, I was thrilled. Right away, I knew some of the work and artists I wanted to feature, such as Jesse Morgan Barnett and Bret Slater, two young talents, both represented by Marty Walker Gallery. They show incredible promise in their intelligent and beautiful work. Some other artists that I chose were a bit off my radar, like Joan Winter from Conduit Gallery, whose geometric, architectural sculptures and prints were a bit of a discovery. One of the artists I selected, Laura Doughtie, is not represented by a gallery, but I remembered seeing an intricate and breathtaking ink drawing of hers in a show at 500X last winter. I tracked her down, discovered she is now part of the artist co-op at 500X, and chose her quiet work for the beautiful “room.”

Jump for more about some of the artists featured.

Sorry for my absence. I’ve missed you all, but I’ve been busy toiling away on the March/April issue of D Home. I can’t wait for you guys to see it! One of the features is about what the 2012 Best Designers in Dallas are loving at the moment. It was great fun getting the answers, but now I have a problem. I want everything So if you’re looking to buy a gift for me, might I suggest  Emilio Pucci, a limited addition book that is bound with a selection of Pucci fabric? I promise I will love it. And you know, while you’re at it, you should probably get a copy for yourself.
