Flowers + A Pop-Up Shop = Two of My Favorite Things

I’m a fan of all manner of the “pop-up”… Art gallery, shop, restaurant, you name it, I’m in. There’s just something incredibly alluring about a temporary place. Blink and it’s gone, forever. I’m a sucker for the urgency.

West Elm (who, I should add, has been killing it lately with their Found Shop and Etsy collaborations) it seems is also a fan of the pop-up, as the retailer kicks-off a series of spring “Pop-Up Flower Shop” events this Saturday, April 28th from 10:00 to 3:00 at Mockingbird Station.

The events, which take place on three consecutive Saturdays (4/28, 5/5, and 5/12), will feature the flower stylings of local florist Branching Out. The Branch florists will be selling single stems as well as full floral arrangements while doling out floral advice and expertise…

Pop-in (sorry, I couldn’t help myself) for all sorts of flower goodness.

Adults Need Summer Camp Too

I spent a good chunk of my morning getting my daughters registered for summer camp, and it was quite the ordeal (not unlike, I’m guessing, applying for an elite Manhattan private school…only different).

After carefully making my selections (which involved countless hours of comparing and coordinating and negotiating), I hit submit on the online form and then proceeded to pray, chant, and cross my fingers in hopes that I registered in time for the girls to nab two of the coveted (and highly limited) spots. Fearing the above wouldn’t be enough, I also channeled my inner-Oprah and spent a good five minutes visualizing them attending said camps.

Once I released all my camp-angst to the universe, I then proceed to get supremely jealous of my children, as, if all goes well, they’ll be spending their summer weeks painting, doing ceramics, swimming, playing tennis, going to the theater, and taking cooking classes.

I want to go to summer camp.

Since that’s not exactly within the realm of possibility, I’m going to do the next best thing and sign up for a few camp-like classes of my own. A little “spring/summer of self-improvement” if you will.

I just registered for a terrarium making workshop at We Are 1976 on April 5th (in hopes of turning out some beauties like the ones above courtesy of Martha), and I have my sights set on calligraphy and photography classes as well.

Next thing you know I’ll be planning field trips. Watch out.

I’ve never made it to a Make Shop & Studio class, but it’s definitely on my list. The barware-etching class coming up on June 18 looks particularly interesting. Students have three choices of glassware (martini glasses, wine glasses, or beer pints) that they will learn to etch using an acid solution that creates permanent designs. You can bring a design to class, create one while you’re there, or use one of the studio’s. The cost is $54, and you must register 48 hours in advance. Other upcoming classes include hand embroidery, aprons, and screen printing.

We’re not all gardening experts like our fearless leader Christine Allison. Some of us can’t keep an ivy alive. I fall into the second category. If you’re more like me than Christine, check out Gardening 101 at North Haven Gardens on Sunday from 11 am- 4 pm. The one-day seminar is $65 and focuses on four main topics: soil preparation, planning your garden, planting your garden, and care and maintenance. Go to North Haven’s website for more info on this class and other upcoming events.
