    • When I Met the Calvin Chair, It Was Love at First Seat

The Calvin chair by Massoud, $1,199 at Neiman Marcus

Here’s how my furniture shopping has gone this week: I needed a desk. So I looked everywhere. I probably looked at 1 billion places. Couldn’t find an acceptable desk. I thought I might die desk-less. Then, finally, with a little help from my mom, I found a desk. Whew. That was hard. But now I need a chair to go with the desk! Oh, will it ever end? I’ve only looked at half a billion places so far, but I’ve encountered a different kind of problem. I found a chair—the chair, actually—but it’s way beyond my budget. Let me introduce you to the Calvin chair. Isn’t it a beauty? The yellow houndstooth, the black leather seat, the nailhead trim—I love it all. If you love it, too, and you have a spare $1,199 lying around, Neiman Marcus can hook you up.

      Lorraine Brock of Get Organized!

Laura admits that her desk is a disaster. So I didn’t feel bad when I sent a picture of her cluttered workspace to organizing guru Lorraine Brock and asked for help. Lorraine took a look and replied with a laundry list of tips LK could use to revamp her cubicle. She also had this to say: “Seeing this photo makes me want to get in my car and drive straight to the location of this desk and give it the makeover it deserves.” Well, Lorraine, I’m happy to report that Laura took your advice to heart and has made great strides in de-cluttering her desk. It’s a work in progress, of course, but we’ll get there. I just know it.

To see Lorraine’s tips and some before and after pics of the desk that dare not speak its name, please jump. And check out Lorraine live and in person when she speaks at this weekend’s Great Big Texas Home Show.

No matter the season, there’s always something to do at Martis Camp, a private gated community situated on 2,177 acres between Truckee, California, and North Lake Tahoe in the Martis Valley. In winter, you can hit the slopes—the property offers private ski access via the Martis Camp Express. And in summer, try the Tom Fazio 18-hole golf course. There are also 26 miles of trails, a tennis pavilion, a fishing lake, and an all-purpose venue called the Family Barn, where residents can bowl, watch movies, play indoor basketball, attend concerts, and more. These amenities must be paying off because home buyers have been scooping up property. Martis Camp just announced more than 90 property sales in 2011 totaling $90.2 million. Since sales launched in 2006, 50 homes have been completed, 82 are under construction, and 68 are in the design process. Homesites begin in the $500,000s, and custom homes start at $1,995,000. Jump for more scenes from Martis Camp.

The Gypsy Wagon always has some fun event on the calendar, but the outdoor Swap and Flea that’s going down this Sunday sounds like it might be the best one yet. Carley Seale and Co. have hand selected 20 vendors to set up shop outside the store for one day only. The vendors are mostly just regular people who happen to have some treasures that need new homes. Think vintage goodies and home decor. But these folks aren’t the only ones with “massively crazy deals.” The Gypsy Wagon will have a bargain booth, too. It will be set up inside the store and inside Gertie A Go-Go, the absolutely adorable 1966 Airstream trailer that serves as the Gypsy Wagon on wheels. There will be discounted winter clothes, retired store displays, clearance items, and some surprises from the Seale garage. Besides all that, Ruthie’s Rolling Cafe and Trailercakes will be on the premises from 11:30 am-1:30 pm to serve up some food-truck goodness. The sale starts at 11 am and goes through 5 pm.
