If you want to make a lasting impression, go for wallpaper -it’s back and making a huge impact. Let go of your preconceived ideas of wallpaper. Today’s designs are modern and on trend. Instead of hanging expensive art, use wallpaper to create a focal point. This particular Elitis wallpaper is what made me fall in love with this brand. They have several neat, sophisticated patterns which make them my current go-to. I promise I don’t get a check every time I mention them. It’s legit people.

I’m not a TV connoisseur, so to speak, but I do know that I like a big picture and loud music. I wasn’t overly obsessed with the acoustics for this space. Rather my goal was to make our media room more of a usable common area that was centrally located. A media room doesn’t have to be a cave. I love the light that pours into this space. Black out curtains can quickly change the atmosphere so I don’t see permanent midnight as a necessity for a media room.

Being a nine year old with a rockin’ room is a rough gig, but somebody’s got to do it. Luckily for us, Blake Molthan was up to the challenge. According to Dad, Mark Molthan, Blake is a risk taker. His youth and free spirit set him apart – he’s not afraid of making mistakes.  Maybe we should all follow Blake’s lead. Go ahead; jump on your bed, live a little!

Mark tells us that you typically will not see a return on money spent in secondary rooms.  For this reason, he doesn’t see much value in going overboard in these spaces.  Unless, of course, the secondary rooms are in his house and his children will be living in them.  While Mark made efforts to keep costs down, he says every penny that went into these rooms was absolutely worth it. “It was for the kids.” The children’s rooms were very important to him and allowing each one to design their own space was a great experience for him.  According to Mark, 11-year-old Molly is one of the most decisive designers he’s ever worked with. She knew exactly what she wanted.  It all started with a passion for purple and the bubble chair she had to have.

We’ve already established that everybody loves their baby girls, but expert home builder, Mark Molthan, loves all three of his children and wanted to ensure each one had a room to call their own. He gave them ownership and full creative control to design a space that would reflect their individual styles and personalities.  Armed with impeccable taste and a zeal for teal, 14 year-old Megan Molthan spent a day as a designer alongside her Dad.

Chandeliers come in many shapes, sizes, and materials, but all invoke a feeling of time and place.  Chandeliers are no longer limited to entries and dining rooms, but are being used in all rooms of the home. Mark and his team are putting them in family rooms, master bedrooms, master baths, and anywhere additional “sparkle” is wanted – even the kitchen!

Lighting is a great way to set the mood and add a point of interest to any space. Whether it’s the center of attention or a subtle enhancement, a chandelier should compliment the lines of the other features in the room.

It would be impossible not to feel like a pretty, pretty princess with a bedroom like this one. The high beams and ceiling treatment create a sophisticated atmosphere that is not typical of a child’s room. Mark tells us that parents are now bringing the design aesthetic of their homes into their children’s rooms and putting just as much thought into lighting, design, and décor.

Mark encourages his clients to have a little fun and take risks. “We don’t have to live in a beige world.” This Viking oven says it all. The orange adds a unique element to the space while complimenting the end grain mesquite island.  If you’re feeling adventurous but not quite so bold, this oven also comes in a more subdued Cobalt blue that Mark is a fan of as well.

Residential basements in Texas were almost non-existent, until recent years.  Mark discovered that building underground was a great way to add square footage to your home without taking up more land on your property. Basements have great flexibility and can provide space for media centers, playrooms, adult lounges, studies, wine rooms, exercise rooms, and more. The space is only limited by your imagination and family’s needs.

Basements make a perfect location for home theaters. Without natural sunlight sneaking in, you have an ideal dark theater feeling as well as great sound insulation in the walls.
