On the House with Mark Molthan: Spiraling Stairwells

“A well-designed stairwell can really emphasize the grandeur of a home,” says Mark. “Homeowners can choose from a variety of styles and materials to give their stairwell special star quality, from forged iron and marble to limestone and custom-designed domes.”

Spiraling stairwells can draw the eye up—or even down—to intricate ceiling details, custom handrails, and elegant chandeliers, as well as direct attention to specialty rooms, like wine cellars or media rooms.

The painted dome and crown molding at the top of this gorgeous spiraling stairwell lend an Old World feel to the space and were custom designed for this Platinum Series home by Mark Molthan. Other luxurious features include a forged iron handrail, cream-colored marble stairs that were hand cut to fit this home’s staircase, and a crystal chandelier that gives a soft glow when illuminated at night.

Metallic paint draws attention to this dome and was chosen to coordinate with the custom, forged brass handrail on the stairwell. Small LED lights emphasize the limestone treads.
