On The House With Mark Molthan: Bookmatched Countertops

In this breathtaking kitchen and living room area, Mark’s design focus for this grand-size space featuring high ceilings and exposed beams was to make it light, open, and airy. “We wanted the space to feel cozy, family-oriented, and comfortable for everyone’s needs and various situations, from snack time for small children to large family gatherings,” Mark says.

The space’s beautiful details range from large candelabras situated over the vent hood to the soft, blue piping in the cabinetry—all elements that create an atmosphere reminiscent of a country estate.

The shining star in this French-country styled room? The oversized kitchen island. “Everyone naturally gathers around the kitchen island—it’s the perfect place to entertain and visit with family and friends,” he says. Because marble slabs of this size and scale are hard to come by, Mark bookmatched the island’s marble surface, a technique in which two adjoining surfaces are produced from the same slab, yet appear to be one cohesive piece. “It’s a true design accomplishment,” says Mark.
