Love It and Leave It: Carolina V Gentry

Carolina V Gentry is one busy blogger/interior designer/shop owner. Her and Beth Dotolo are the principal interior designers of Pulp Design Studios, a design firm known for modern spaces that reflect the home owner’s individual style. The duo’s blog, Hello, Splendor!, features the designers’ travels, inspiration, and favorite things. And if that wasn’t enough, not only have they curated their favorite things for their online shop, Pulp Home, but they also offer up some fabulous custom designed furniture. Carolina, take it away.

Carolina gives us her insights after the jump.

Leave it in 2012:

Painted Furniture: “This trend has been strong for the past several years and we were certainly no stranger to a good coat of high intensity paint! But too many painted pieces in a room is overwhelming and so we’re ready to focus on natural materials and unfinished surfaces in 2013.”

Damask Patterns: “Maybe it’s just our personal taste, but we’d take a modern geometric over a flowery damask any day. And we predict this next year will see a similar shift in design preference as well.”

Chevron: “We hate to put down such a fun geometric as chevron but it might be time to move on for a bit. Perhaps this isn’t a trend to throw out altogether, but save for another year instead.”

Turquoise: “Ah, turquoise. You’ve been disguised as “peacock”, “teal”, “aqua”, and much more. You’ve also completely saturated the market for the past few years. So, we’re ready to see some other hues shine in the spotlight for a bit.”

Drum Shade Chandeliers: “This trend is hit or miss for us. But orb and sphere-shaped ceiling lighting is catching a lot more of our attention these days than drum shades.”

Love it in 2013:

Cultural influence: “We saw an overwhelming influx of home products inspired by and pulled from exotic cultures in 2012 such as Tribal handcrafts, ikat textiles, Moroccan wedding blankets, flat weave dhurries.  We loved it then and we’re definitely still loving the well-traveled look now!”

Touches of Neon: “The latest from the fashion runways has hit the home market big time! A touch of neon added to an interior space instantly gives it a lift and injects a contemporary energy that we love.”

Black and White: “A classic, no doubt, but this year we’re especially interested in taking this dynamic duo into more traditional spaces and playing with shades of gray.”

Pattern Play: “Another fashion favorite is making splashes in the interior scene! For those of our clients who are a bit more adventurous, we’d love to play with the idea of layering patterns on top of each other to give a space added character and warmth in 2013.”

Knitwear: “The ultimate cozy factor in a space has to be a great accent throw and chunky knitwear really steps it up a notch. We love the Ralph Lauren references and heavy woven texture. A total DO for the new year.”

  1. I do agree that the color turquoise needs to take the backseat for this year. However, I don’t think I can let go of drum shade chandeliers. They’re sleek, modern, and architectural, which I think is what makes up contemporary lighting these days. I’ve had this gorgeous piece in my foyer http://tinyurl.com/cz74tpr and I don’t think I’m ready to let of it now. It still gets the attention of adoration of my guests anyway.
